Newark Airport’s new Terminal A boasts an expertly installed revolutionary TPO roofing system.

Newark Airport’s new one-million-square-foot Terminal A features 33 gates, 4 lounges, and a variety of restaurants and stores. The new terminal, which is expected to accommodate millions of passengers a year, needed a trustworthy roofing system that would protect passengers and businesses for years to come.

The roofing contractor, Philadelphia-based Mike Kobithen Roofing, suggested a fully adhered Versico TPO roof with APEEL™ Protective Film for Terminal A. Versico’s patented APEEL Protective Film guards the TPO membrane’s surface from scuffs and dirt accumulation during installation and eliminates the need to clean the roof once the project is complete. Durable and easy to remove, APEEL Protective Film helps to save time and labor, improve aesthetics, preserve reflectivity, and increase customer satisfaction.

Mike Kobithen Roofing recommended adhering the TPO using Versico’s CAV-GRIP® 3V, a spray-applied aerosol contact adhesive and primer used to adhere the TPO to the horizontal substrate. CAV-GRIP 3V is low-odor, is easy to use and clean up, and it can be used in temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C) when used as an adhesive.

The crew from Mike Kobithen Roofing began by installing a poly vapor barrier followed by 5⁄8"-thick DensDeck Roof Board secured with Versico’s Flexible DASH Adhesive. Next they installed a base layer of 3.5"-thick VersiCore Polyiso Insulation, followed by a tapered VersiCore Polyiso system and a layer of 1⁄4"-thick DensDeck Prime. Their final step was installing the TPO membrane with APEEL Protective Film using Versico’s CAV-GRIP 3V Adhesive, then flashing all the penetrations.

Mike Kobithen of Mike Kobithen Roofing said, “This was a very complicated project partly due to the shape of the building. There were also 18 built-in skylights with roofs on top and glass on the sides. As for rooftop equipment, I can’t even begin to tell you how much equipment we had to flash, as well as coordinating the installation of curbs, pipes, and other items.”

The roofing installation was completed in about five months and the new Terminal A opened in December 2022. The Versico roof on Terminal A will protect more than 13 million passengers a year for years to come.
